They are both lying by omission at this point. I might love you for this. primarily because i am egotistical enough to like it when someone reiterates my own thoughts. :) Liked the review. \o/

I am been waiting for this, because all I saw was love for the ep on my "Feed" and that was the LAST thing I felt for it. I don't want to be spewing my dislike in cheerleaders' journals, but I was feeling lonely in my rage coma.

You are actually more charitable to Sam's portrayal than I am this season--I find him so unlikable that I'm not sure I will continue watching. I just feel like the most literal critiques of his character--the ones made by people with either a predilection not to like him or frankly just not enough smarts to see the big picture--have actually become canon this year. That might not have been authorial intent, but it sure as hell is authorial result! Plus the writing this season has just plain sucked.

WHERE'S MY CHOCOLATE CAKE?!

Huh. For me it's Dean that I'm having a harder time with. Maybe because the things that are bothering me about Dean are actually things that have come up for me before with canon Dean; a lot of the bad Sam stuff I can't quite take seriously because it doesn't feel rooted in the character to me. I think I've finally managed to meta myself into a place where I am more or less at peace with both, but I'm tired of having so damn much heavy lifting to do just to not feel that I'm supposed to be engaged in watching two people I don't like very much eventually reconstruct a toxic relationship.

Dean seems pretty basic Dean to me, this season. I don't have an issue with it except that I think (I'm a killer/Sammy doesn't love me) is not all that interesting in its 8th season. I would have preferred perhaps a darker, more ruthless Dean. The Dean we saw killing Amy, in fact. (For example, what if Dean had taken the old lady's head off--the one who stood by while her husband murdered people every year?)

Then again, maybe it would have been the soulless Sam babysitting scenario again. Dunno.

Your chocolate cake analogy is brilliant. Awesome recap, as ever.
